How CEOs can make implementation Easier!

Implementation remains one of the toughest challenges organizations face - and one that often keeps CEOs up at night.

The truth is that implementation doesn’t fail because people are unwilling. It fails when teams are unclear, uninvolved, or uninspired.

In a recent business strategy session that our company, MCL, facilitated with over 100 executives, we discovered that only 10 -12% of their teams truly understood their organization’s strategy and direction. With such limited clarity and alignment, successful implementation becomes almost impossible.

Effective execution requires more than a top-down directive. It calls for alignment, clarity, and shared ownership - beginning with a clear understanding of roles, responsibilities, and who to be consulted. When people know what’s expected of them, where they fit in the larger picture, and whose input matters, they act with greater confidence and accountability.

Equally important is leadership modeling. Implementation thrives when CEOs consistently demonstrate the values, priorities, and discipline they expect from others. Leadership example sets the tone for organizational behaviour - clarity and commitment at the top cascade into clarity and commitment across teams.

Too often, CEOs rely on selective communication - sharing vision within a limited circle or assuming that formal updates automatically lead to buy-in.

True implementation success depends on conversation, collaboration, and clarity at every level.

As Steve Haines, founder of the Haines Centre for Strategic Management, once said: “People support what they help create.”

That principle remains as relevant today as ever. When employees are involved in shaping direction, they develop genuine ownership - and that ownership drives results.

At MCL, we believe implementation succeeds when every individual understands the strategy, has clarity in their role, knows who to be consulted, sees the right example in leadership, and takes shared responsibility for collective success.

As the CEO, always remember, not everything that can be counted truly counts.
