The real enemies of the CEO!
Being a CEO is an interesting place to be. Everyone wants to impress you, to be on your side, and to stay in your good books. At this point, finding people who genuinely care about your success becomes a real challenge.
In reality, a CEO’s real enemies are not those who criticize or highlight problems. The real enemies are those who remain silent when things are not right - those who give the impression that everything is fine when it isn’t.
When challenges eventually surface, these same individuals are often the first to distance themselves or criticize the CEO they once praised.
Smart CEOs develop the ability to distinguish between people who seek closeness for personal advantage and those who are sincerely committed to organizational and leadership success.
A simple test is this: Who tells you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear? Those who only echo what pleases you may boost your ego temporarily, but they rarely help you grow - or help the organization thrive. They are your real enemies because they are not after your success, but their personal benefits.
As a leader, learn to recognize such individuals early and be cautious of their influence.
As the CEO, always remember, not everything that can be counted truly counts.
